South Eastern Coalfield Limited’s Gevra Mine Set to Become The Largest Coal Mine in Asia

Gevra mine of South Eastern Coalfield Limited (SECL), Located in Chhattisgarh, Asia’s largest coal mine is on the verge of being built. The mine has recently received environmental clearance to increase its production capacity to 70 million tonnes per annum from the current 52.5 million tonnes. This expansion is an important moment not only for SECL but also for the country’s energy sector, as India moves towards increasing its coal production capacities.

The Coal Ministry in coordination with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) played a key role in expediting the environmental clearance process. This accelerated approval underlines the strategic importance of Gevra mine as one of the mega projects under the umbrella of SECL, which aims to meet the growing energy demands of the country.

Mr. Prem Sagar Misha, CMD, SECL, described the approval as a “historic milestone” and emphasized on the vision of making Gevra not only Asia’s but the world’s largest mine, equipped with state-of-the-art mining operations. This ambition reflects India’s broader objective to increase its coal mining efficiency and productivity in line with global best practices.

SECL Management expressed its gratitude to the Ministry of Coal for their unwavering support in securing Environment Clearance (EC) for Gevra Mine. The achievement is celebrated as a “historic day” for SECL and Chhattisgarh, establishing the state as the future site of Asia’s largest coal mine. The contribution of various agencies at both the Central and State levels as well as the Government of Chhattisgarh along with MoEFCC were also appreciated for their prompt action in granting the EC.

About Gevra Mine

Gevra, one of SECL’s flagship projects, has been a cornerstone of India’s coal mining industry for over four decades, significantly contributing to the country’s energy security. With an impressive annual production of 52.5 million tonnes in the financial year 2022-23, Gevra has already established itself as the largest coal mine in the country. This mine is spread over approximately 10 kilometers in length and 4 kilometers in width.

In its operations, Gevra uses eco-friendly, blast-free mining technologies such as surface miner and ripper mining. Additionally, it utilizes the highest capacity Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM), which includes 42 cubic meter shovels and 240 tonne dumpers for overburden removal. The mine is also equipped with first-mile connectivity facilities, including a conveyor belt, silos and a rapid loading system, facilitating rapid and environment-friendly coal extraction.
