The Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 was an important event in the history of Manipur. During this war, the small state of Manipur fought bravely against British colonial expansion. Despite their courageous efforts, the Manipuri forces were ultimately defeated at the Battle of Khongjom, leading to the loss of sovereignty of Manipur to the British.
Celebrating Khongjom Day
This year, the state of Manipur celebrated Khongjom Day with a solemn ceremony at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex located at Kheba Ching in Thoubal district. Manipur Governor Ms. Anusuiya Uike, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, cabinet ministers, MLAs and high-ranking officials including top civil and police officials were present. A large number of people also participated to pay tribute to him.
During the ceremony, the Governor and the Chief Minister offered floral tributes, followed by a guard of honour, general salute, reversed arms, sounding of the last post and two minutes of silence. Similar ceremonies were held in different parts of the state to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for their country.

The Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 also saw the martyrdom of two prominent figures, Yubaraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General. On August 13, 1891, he was hanged in front of the public at Feidabung, now known as Bir Tikendrajit Park. This shocking incident deeply affected the people of Manipur.
To honor these martyrs and their love for their motherland, Manipurians celebrate Patriot’s Day on 13 August every year. It is a day to pay tribute to their bravery and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
